What Do You Want To Know About iPhone, iPad & iOS Development?

Today, I want to try something new.  Usually, I blog about what’s going on in the mobile app development world or I write up tutorials about how to do the latest whiz-bang iOS code trick.  But today, I’m curious to know what’s going on in your head out there.

So – I am doing this post not to impart any great secrets from behind the iOS curtain. I’m curious about what YOU as a reader curious about iOS app development are looking for.  Take a second to think about it and just respond to this post with a question.  I’ll do my best to answer it or link you to a resource that will answer better than I can.

Ok, so What Do You Want To Know About iPhone, iPad & iOS Development?

    Hello,

It’s a very good thing to give your readers the opportunity to tell you what they expect.

I’m glad to be able to give some advices and ideas, so here we go.

First of all it was a clever move to “reboot” the tutorials a few weeks ago, alongside with other tutorials. I, for one, didn’t need to follow this beginner chapters (I already did it before), but it’s cool for newbies to have some learning sources other than N years old tutorials.

Another general issue when learning iOS development (and programming in a general way), is that the reader is able to understand, reproduce and even go further every single tutorial. But when the time comes to build his own app, he’s stuck, and don’t know where to begin. He has indeed managed to learn many things : Objective C syntax, Xcode IDE, iOS SDK, but he can’t melt up all that to do the app he’s aiming to do.

I ran through such an issue when I had to make my own app, and I managed to do it eventually. So tutorials where a full app is built from scratch could help a lot I think.

Also, there is the problem of the iOS versions. Today, we have iOS 5 with some amazing improvements : ARC, storyboards and appearance. But nearly everybody has to build an app that runs on both iOS4 and iOS5, at least. (Many developers still support iPhone OS 3 too). So it’s not clear for newcomers to know how to build an app that would support both versions. Does one need to build against the last SDK and then use some techniques to prevent it from crashing on the olders ? Or to build against the older SDKs and forget about the new APIs, and wait a year or too before using it in production ? How to do it in both cases ? Some experienced advices would be good too.

For now, that’s what comes to me if I have to ask some orientations. If I have some other ideas I’ll let you know.

What you’re doing is great, keep up the good work, and thanks a lot for your help !!!

hi Matt. I have absolutely no programming knowledge. But I really would like to make an app. My idea is not really complicated (I guess), it’s something like a concert finder.

Should I team up with someone experienced with programming to make this happen? Thanks.

Hi, Thanks for the website and post.

I am a newbie, although I have the experience of designing an app and collaborating on it’s creation and launch in the iTunes App Store (Doubleshot Photo for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch).

I would like to know how to do a good specification for my new app, something I can take to a developer that will give a very clear idea of what I want the app to do functionally.

Also, can you recommend any frameworks for creating an app from the ground up, for a non-coder like myself? I just got a developer account but haven’t had it activated, and so have not had a chance to explore the tools there.

    Thanks again,
    GF
