This past week an attendee, Kevin Lee,  from one of my live events released an iPhone app for Philly’s Beer Week. The app is really cool – you can use it to navigate local beer events that are taking place in Philly’s famous beer event.

Philly Beer Week

The app is aptly named “Philly Beer Week” – not only will it show you what is going on this week in Philly (in terms of beer that is) but you can use it to see maps of the events and even get information about taxis and transportation in case you try one too many beers.

Check out the app here, it is well done and free (in particular I like the UITabBar customization that they did).  Philly Beer Week was created with programmers and designers from Indy Hall (the Philly co-opt shared office space) and Cocoa-Heads.

If you will be in Toronto (that’s in Canada folks) on April 23rd-25th don’t miss out on our iPhone Boot Camp. This is an intense three day instruction-crazy code fest where we turn you into an app developer (almost) over night.

So I have done this seminar a few times and it is always fun to get out there and meet people interested in this type of software development. There is a lot of excitement especially now that the iPad is out.

Who knows – I can’t make any promises but maybe the app you make next week at our iPad and iPhone Boot Camp will make you rich! At least you will be the coolest kid on the block when you can return home and hack your shiny new iPhone or iPad when it comes to Canada!

Some Notes For Attendees

I will be using the latest version of iPhone OS (4.0) with Snow Leopard. To ensure that you can follow along as easily as possible make sure to have these two software components up to date (this impacts some screens and framework features that we will use in class). Also, if you are planning on using your device to develop make sure to have it in class on Friday.

Objective-C Tutorials

Hopefully you have an pretty decent idea of how Objective-C works. Either you know OOP very well or have taken our Objective-C course. If not that is ok, and I will go over some of the main syntax for Objective-C.

However, it is probably a good idea to check out a few articles (the Apple site has a good Objective-C primer). Also, I have two tutorials available on my website that will give you some grounding in Objective-C and also iPhone SDK:

Boot Camp?

Before I get into that let me tell you what these iPhone boot camps are all about. The idea is that you will spend three days learning everything you need to know to get your app on the store. You will get an instructor who has been there already who will first tell you what you need to know. Then you will spend time actually working on your app and you will be able to get help right in class. Very hands on.

Ok – So Who/What is iPhone Boot Camp?

These guys have been running seminars every month in New York, San Francisco and London. They have experience both in writing, teaching and iPhone development. Some of the people involved include Phone Authors Steve Kochan, ‘Programing in Objective-C 2.0 and Jeff LaMarche, “Beginning iPhone Development”, developers Alex Cone, lead instructor, former Apple Engineer and CEO of Codefab and Eddie Marks and James Anthony, co-founders of Inedible Software, developers of the best three million download app “Shotgun” and “Air Guitar”

I have also looked over their content and teaching materials and I feel that what they are doing is high quality and most importantly, it is what you need to get your app done. So these guys already do this seminar regularly in big cities with a big tech/geek culture like New York, San Francisco and London. I have seem the price of this seminar go as high as $2,000. They seem to want to expand their reach to more medium sized cities like Philadelphia. As I know from my own business you usually need to start by offering your product at a lower price and that is what they appear to be doing right now…
