Little Known Alternative iPhone App Business Models

This year many iPhone app developers have had a knee-jerk reaction to the gold-rush atmosphere of the Apple App Store and so we have release tons of 99 cent ring tone apps in a blind hope to get rich fast.

As I learned in this talk given by Dan Grisby from Mobile Orchard at this past 360iDev – there are other ways to start a business based on the iPhone.

Dan was nice enough to post a recording of this talk over at Mobile Orchard so I encourage you to go listen to it:

For me, the main point is that we need to get creative about how we generate revenue from the App Store – this is something you should think about before you never design your first app. The first thing is pricing – Dan makes a convincing argument that 99 cent apps will not sustain even one app developer.

So, at the very least I would encourage you to think about how you price your apps. On that note, I can tell you that my most expensive app at $4.99 has always sold more and made more money than any of my other apps. Just saying…

The real “gold-rush” for a lot of people will be with consulting work. Dan gives some good advice in his talk that will position you to charge $150+ per hour when you do consulting. Hint: you should be more that just a programmer.

So, check out Dan’s talk and his site here:
